Types and Causes of Chronic Pain

Pain in any part of the body often creates uneasiness for the person. They would not only be able to carry out some tasks but also they would remain under constant stress of pain. The pain would not only affect them physically but also mentally. So, it becomes essential to identify the pain and understand the basic cause and cure for it. There are different types of pain that are not curable but the situation can be controlled to some extent.

What is chronic pain?

Any type of pain if it lasts for more than 12 weeks even after using proper medication then it would be called as chronic pain. The pain can be because of some injury or surgery. Sometimes, the pain can even exists without any injury or even a history of pain. There is no prediction about how and when the person will suffer from the disease. The main reason is inactive nervous system. Usually, there are some pain carrying nerves that carry the pain signals to the brain. However, the usual procedure is reduction of pain after sometimes and that does not happen because the nerves keep on carrying the pain sensations. The brain will keep on detecting the pain and that will lead to constant chronic pain. There are many methods to cope up with the pain but there is no accurate cure for the pain.

Types of Chronic pain

There are four types of chronic pain.

  1. Nociceptive pain: It can occur because of tissue injury like arthritis pain or post-surgery pain.
  2. Inflammatory pain: The pain will arise when there is inflammation because of wrong response of the body’s immune system.
  3. Neuropathic pain: When the nervous system suffers from irritation there will pain such as neuropathy or radicular pain.
  4. Functional pain: Undefined pain that is without any injury, surgery, tissue damage or activity. The condition is included in fibromyalgia and bowel syndrome.

Cause of Chronic pain

Depending on the type of the pain, the person will be able to define the cause of the pain. The cause can be injury, surgery or tissue damage. However, functional pain is the type that arises because of no reason. Sometimes, the medication might give a negative response which would lead to such problems. However, there is no specific reason for getting chronic pain. The only method is to adopt medication to improve the condition and survive.
